General Dentistry Filling Options: Metal Dental Materials for Crowns and Fillings

When it comes to general dentistry, there are a lot of different materials used. Metal, in particular, has been used for a long time, which makes it a reliable material when it comes to certain procedures. Of course, there are many other materials that can be used and that are frequently selected, but metal is known to be strong, making it rare to need any type of repair or replacement. Metal materials for restorations in general dentistry

Below is a quick overview of what metal materials are used in general dentistry for fillings and crowns. Having an understanding of this information may prove to be helpful when it comes to preparing for certain procedures.

Dental crowns

In general dentistry, dental crowns are one of the most popular ways to restore teeth that are in bad shape. They are a very versatile treatment because they completely cap a damaged tooth, making it practically brand new. As far as material makeup goes, general dentists tend to recommend ceramic or metal crowns, as they provide the most stability and strength.

Ceramic is a strong natural-looking material that can last up to 10 years with the right care. Metal, on the other hand, might be gold or metal alloy, which is a combination of multiple metals. Gold is one of the strongest materials known in general dentistry. It has been used for a long time as it rarely breaks and provides patients with longevity when it comes to the strength of the teeth.

Dental fillings

Dental fillings are another type of restoration performed in general dentistry. Just like with crowns, fillings are also used to restore teeth that have experienced cavities. However, with fillings, the procedure is less involved, making the process easier on the tooth and the entire oral cavity.

Typically, in general dentistry, metal dental fillings are administered in silver amalgam or gold. Silver amalgam has experienced a lot of controversy over the years because it has been said to contain mercury; however, after a lot of studies, it has been indicated that the small amount is harmless. Gold, on the other hand, is known to be quite reliable and very strong, rarely needing replacement or repair.

What else to know

Metal is a common material choice in general dentistry; however, the one downfall is that it is not invisible, making it noticeable to the eye. A lot of people opt for ceramic or porcelain materials because they appear natural. Nonetheless, gold, silver, and alloys are all strong materials that will not fail as quickly as others.
